Kenana Knitters started in 1998, with the primary object being to help rural women find some much needed form of income utilizing their spinning and knitting skills. The Kenana group buys homespun wool produced locally in Kenya, then knits it into beautiful animals, children’s hat, scarf & mitten sets and many other items.

All products are made with home-spun wool, in a variety of natural and plant-dyed colours. All materials are sourced locally, and renewable energy supplies are used where possible. The fabulous colour range is provided by local plants grown specifically by the group. Every item is fully washable and easy to care for.

Whooooo wouldn't want one of these adorable owls? Very soft and cuddly, the owls have a loosely looped knit coat and are about 8" tall. SOLD OUT but check back real soon.

Kenya is still very much a male orientated society where the wife and family may have little claim on a man's earnings. Kenana Knitters group enables its workers to directly benefit from their efforts. Knitting is ideal. it requires minimal equipment, can be done in snatches when time permits. When the rains come and the family crops and vegetables need tending not much knitting gets done, but in times of drought and crop failure, when the family garden is bare of supplementary vegetables, money can now be earned to purchase the necessities of life.

Njoro is mainly a farming area - agricultural work for the men is easier to come by than for the women-folk, yet agricultural wages are insufficient to support large and extended families. This group generates two forms of income, buying the wool, then creating more work by turning the wool into a marketable product. The money goes direct into the hands of the women who are thus able to improve the quality of their lives.

This beauty Queen, is @ 17" tall, from the tip of her crown, to the tip of her tail. She adorns beautiful seashells as her bikini top! Colors may vary, but all Mermaid Queens are gorgeous! Note her thumbs, nose & ears!!
